Using the DGT-TM

Introduction

‘Since November 2007 the European Commission's Directorate-General for Translation has made its multilingual Translation Memory for the Acquis Communautaire, DGT-TM, publicly accessible in order to foster the European Commission’s general effort to support multilingualism, language diversity and the re-use of Commission information.’

CafeTran offers great ways to query the DGT-TM.

Creating a Translation Memory for your language combination

After downloading the zipped files from the DGT site, you should first create a Translation Memory for your language combination.

  • Open a Terminal window.
  • To create a Translation Memory for German and Dutch enter:

java -jar TMXtract.jar DE NL output.tmx Vol_2013_?.zip

Your computer responds with:

extract.png

As you can see, 477,697 Translation Units (TUs) have been created for German-Dutch.
